How hard is it to sew?

I know this is a loaded question, but, I am a beginner sewer and want to make tote bags, aprons and dog shirts. I am picking out patterns I like, but, don’t like any of the ones that are marked easy. I am crafty and a quick learner, but should I stick with the easy patterns?

I think it is easy to sew. With practice, you can sew a straight line and then you are ready to make something. It really is as easy as that!!

Okay, so you do not like any of the patterns marked “easy”. I suggest you try one first just to get the hang of how things are made and to learn how to follow the instructions. Then, go ahead and select another pattern. You can open the pattern envelope and carefully pull out the sewing directions while not disturbing the actual pattern pieces, while you are still right there in the store. Read the instructions and if you feel like you can follow that pattern, then buy it.

You sound like you have the ambition to learn and I believe you can; however, please begin slowly. If you select patterns beyond your capability, you may get discouraged and I would hate to see your talent wasted that way.

Be sure to follow the fabric recommendations on the pattern envelope as that is a common mistake beginners make. It is very frustrating to work with fabric not appropriate for the selected pattern.

I wish you lots of luck and please remember to keep your machine well oiled and don’t wait for a needle to break before you change it as they lose their sharpness and tear into the fabric instead of passing in between the fibers.

One last word, my dear — One who sews is a seamstress, not a sewer. A sewer is a series of underground pipes that carry waste water and toilet sewage. Ewwww.
