RECYCLING EFFORTS COULD LEAVE PAPER TRAIL FOR IDENTITY THIEVES
Our ‘green’ environmental efforts could be putting our safety at risk.
We may be unwittingly exposing ourselves to identity theft by not taking proper precautions when tossing all our paper into the recycling bins.How many times do you whisk the discarded junk mail into the recycling bin?Or gather huge piles of papers after our annual spring clean and haul them to our local collection box?
Recycling is vital but careful vigilance of how and what we throw out is vital for our own safety. With every good intention, we could however, be putting ourselves at risk.
Identity theft is one of the fastest-growing crimes in the world, affecting people from all walks of life from celebrities and high-ranking officials to the poor, for whom every penny counts.
It’s estimated that every 60 seconds, a person in America becomes a victim of identity theft, while 2008 figures from the Identity Fraud Steering Committee in the UK revealed that identity fraud cost that economy 1.2 billion pounds in one year alone. One recent high profile victim of identity theft was chairman of the Federal Reserve, Brian Bernanke, who was involved in an elaborate multi-million dollar fraud ring following the theft of his wife’s purse.It could happen to you.
Look closely at some of your junk mail. You may be surprised at how often your personal details are repeated on all the enclosed bits of paper. Throwing those intact into an easily accessible recycling bin gives criminals more than one opportunity to target you.
