All You Wanted to Know About the Pepper Spray

These sprays usually come in aerosol form containing OC or oleoresin capsicum, which is in fact chili pepper.

When sprayed on an assailant, the pepper spray will inflame the mucous membranes of an individual, like those found in the nose, eyes, lungs, and throat. This will result in the temporary loss of sight of the attacker, accompanied by heavy breathing because of the pungent scent of the spray. The effect will usually depend on how strong the spray is; it can last 30 to 40 minutes or even longer. Once the attacker is immobile, you can immediately run away to safety.

In order for the spray to be effective, there are some things that you have to consider. For one, it is important that you don’t just aim and fire. Timing is very important and recognizing a potential threat is also necessary. Do not shoot, or even raise or point the weapon, until you are ready to fire. You need to wait until the assailant is within range. Make sure that the spray will hit him full in the face. Your purpose is to surprise the attacker before he can have the chance to react.

Ideally, you put the spray in your purse. As mentioned earlier, different sizes and styles have been made available like one that is disguised as a keychain. Almost everyone carries a purse or a bag anyway wherever she goes, so the spray can easily be hidden in the purse. However, make sure that you will have an easy access to the spray; you can choose a purse that has an outside pocket. Do not keep it where it will take time and some rummaging before you get hold of it.

If you decide to use the pepper spray, make sure that you practice and learn all the techniques. Do not wait until there will be a need for you to use the device to learn how to use it, for it just might be too late.
