Preventing Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

What is carbon monoxide?

Carbon monoxide is a poisonous and odorless gas that cannot be seen or smelled and that can kill a person in minutes. Whenever gas, oil, kerosene, wood or charcoal are burned, carbon monoxide is produced. If appliances that burn fuel are maintained and used properly, the amount of carbon monoxide produced is usually not hazardous. Hundreds of people die accidentally every year from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by appliances that are not used properly or that are malfunctioning. Carbon monoxide from idiling cars kills even more people. Victims are overcome before they can get help because the carbon monoxide builds up so rapidly.

Once it is inhaled, carbon monoxide:

* Decreases the capacity of blood to carry oxygen;
*Permanent brain damage is possible
* Can cause chest pains or heart attacks in people with heart disease.

Carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms?

* Headache
* Dizziness
* Fatigue
* Weakness
* Confusion
* Nausea

How do I prevent carbon monoxide poisoning?

* Never burn charcoal inside homes, tents, campers, vans, trucks, garages, or mobile homes. The fireplace in your home is not to be used to burn charcoal.
* Never use gasoline powered equipment indoors. “Adequate ventilation” is required when using gasoline powered equipment. It is best to use this equipment outdoors because the “adequate” amount of ventilation required is difficult to determine!
*Never be tempted to use a gas oven to heat your home, not even for a short time.
*Idle your car outside, not inside your garage, even if the garage door is open.
*Unvented gas or kerosene heaters should not be used in a room you sleep in.
*Ensure that chimneys and flues are unblocked and in good condition.
* Have oil and gas appliances and fireplaces as well as wood stoves checked every year by a trained professional.
* Carbon monoxide warning devices may provide additional protection, but should not replace the other prevention steps.

If you suspect someone has been poisoned by cabon monoxide, what should you do?

*Immediately move the person to fresh air.
* Take the person to an emergency room and tell them that you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning.
