Five Earth-Friendly Steps To A Reduce Hotel Waste

The need to go green is increasingly big these days – more and more travelers are going green and would most often want to stay in a hotel that has earth-friendly policies. One way to help the environment is to lessen the actual waste materials churned out by the bed and breakfast or hotel. Below are five concrete ways on how you can help reduce the waste output of your establishment.

1. Refresh towels and sheets upon request

Nearly all hotels these days implement a “towels on the floor or in the tub will be replaced” policy but you can take it a step further by letting your guests know that sheets and towels will only be replaced upon request. You can place a specific basket to hold towels that will be replaced and a note can be placed on the beddings if they want a fresh set. If a guest really wants a fresh set, then he or she will really exert the effort of letting your staff know.

2. Encourage paper waste segregation for recycling

Have separate trash bins for paper trash in all of the rooms plus the business centers and hotel lobby. This will encourage the staff and the guests to practice waste segregation. The paper that you get from these bins can be used for recycling and can actually be made into post cards, welcome cards, dining place cards and any other printed material that can use recycled board instead of fresh paper.

3. Install timed outdoor lighting fixtures

Install timers for all of the outdoor fixtures so that they automatically turn off by the time there’s daylight, such as five:30 am. This will help you reduce your overhead in electricity and at the same time, help the world conserve energy. You can also do the same for lighting fixtures on room terraces and balconies. This goes the same for any water feature such as fountains or waterfalls.

4. Replace bar soaps with liquid soaps in dispensers

Replace the regular bar soaps with savvy soap dispensers filled with liquid soap. Every bar of soap thrown away is harmful to the natural environment. Less soap waste means less pollution in the oceans and will also translate to cheaper running costs for your toiletries.

5. Set the printer to double-sided printing

How many proposals and quotations do you print in a day? Set the company printer to do double-sided printing to save on paper. This will help you reduce paper waste and at the same time, help paper costs go down.
