What are the specifics for an exotic dancer to pay taxes?
I’ve been told that I would be considered self-employed and that I need to show myself as a business, I would rather have a numbered website than a phone number listing for this purpose but are they necessary in order to file taxes?
I’m in my early 20′s and don’t know anything about filing tax returns, anyone with some sound advice (preferably who has some tax background other than just paying taxes, unless you’re a dancer) would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
You are probably considered self employed entertainer. As such, there are a few things you can deduct to reduce your tax owing. For instance, you can deduct the cost of costumes used only for work. You can deduct some costs of travel, if you travel a long distance to jobs out of town. They won’t let you deduct costs for local travel.
You don’t need to show yourself as a business in any way. Your income and tax records are what make you a business. You do need to report ALL your income, including tips, private dance fees, etc. Your best way to be safe is to record each and every night what you brought in, and keep those records. Depending on your income, you’ll have to plan on putting aside 25% or more for tax. There are lots of online tax calculation programs that can give you a good guess at how much you’ll pay, if you estimate your income for the year. That’ll give you a good idea how much to put aside.
My recommendation is to place the tax money in a separate account, and NEVER touch it except to pay your taxes.
