Best Diet For Eczema – Seven Chinese Food Secrets To Change Your Life
Eczema is a miserable skin disease for children as well as adults what with the red, dry, thick and scaly skin that feels like it is constantly itching. Eczema is often triggered by an allergic reaction to specific foods and by avoiding these triggers, symptoms are relieved. Chinese dietary therapy is a holistic system of treatment, part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which looks at diet in a completely different way from our western diets. I will give you my seven Chinese foods secrets that will cure your eczema and change your life.
1. Avoid cow’s milk
Eczema can often be triggered by cow’s milk, a common food fed to babies and children. As cow’s milk is very damp in nature this can affect your child’s immature digestive system by causing itchy skin rashes and oozing and weeping lesions. Milk is an uncommon ingredient in the Chinese diet and is used sparingly. However, in the West we tend to over consume milk which is why more and more people are experiencing an allergic reaction to it. If your baby is experiencing eczema then you really need to look for an alternative to milk. Less damp forming alternatives are soy or goat’s milk.
2. Avoid damp forming foods
Not only is cow’s milk damp forming, but there are many other common foods that can cause damp as well.Some of these foods, interestingly, include those that are common eczeam triggers such as wheat and peanuts.Other food that can cause damp are bananas, concentrated orange and tomato juices, sugar and cheese.
3. Stop the greasy food
Fried, greasy foods are extremely damp forming and warm in nature. Eczema is a warm (Yang) disease which means that if there is too much heat in the body it can cause symptoms such as redness, inflammation and thirst. Cooking methods such as roasting, grilling, baking, deep frying, stir frying and sautéing are all yang cooking methods. Boiling, simmering, braising, stewing and steaming food are all cooking methods that are more yin in nature. Foods that are cooked this way are cooler in more nature and thus more nourishing to the body and skin.
4. Eat more cooling and nourishing foods
To treat eczema, you need to reduce redness, inflammation and itching of the skin by clearing heat. As well you should moisten dryness and strengthen the qi (vital energy) and blood. Cooling and moistening foods include grapefruit, lettuce, seaweed, watermelon, cucumber, celery, barley, beancurd (tofu), pears, strawberry, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini and tomatoes.
Excellent qi and blood strengtheners are those foods that are dark green and red in color, for example spinach, kale, beetroot, aduki and kidney beans. Eating meats such as chicken, liver and kidney all act as qi and blood strengtheners. A great way to start the day would be to have a bowl of oat porridge sprinkled with a few dates.
5. Avoid raw and ice cold foods
Too many raw and chilled foods (as opposed to cooling foods) can damage the digestive system. The digestive system requires warmth or digestive fire to function and a prolonged and excessive use of raw or ice-cold foods will eventually weaken this digestive fire. For this reason the Chinese do not tend to eat many raw or ice-cold foods.
6. Balance your flavors
We have often heard that too much of one thing is bad for you and this is true in a Chinese diet.Most Chinese recipes have a balance of the five flavors – salty, sour, bitter, sweet and pungent. For example, salty foods such as seaweed, pork and fish regulate and drain excess moisture and stimulate digestion. Too much salt, however, will dehydrate the body and cause dryness. Sweet foods in moderation such as sugar, honey, nuts, potatoes and rice mildy stimulate the circulation fo qi and blood and moistening the body. However, if you eat too many sweet foods this can lead to the formation of dam and head which is a cause of eczema. Therefore, it is beneficial to include a balance of flavors in your diet. You can increase or decrease a particular flavor according to your needs.
7. Chew slowly and enjoy your food
Emotional stress is quite often a cause of eczema. You know when you are feeling extremely stressed because you can tend to overeat, undereat or not enjoy your food at all.It’s important not to eat when you are angry or in a mood because this affects the movement of qi causing it to stagnate.Over time, qi stagnation can cause a build up of heat in the blood which can manifest itself as skin rashes and inflammation.
Just focus on your food, eat it slowly and thoughtfully, and foget watching television or reading while eating.In order to help our digestive system to work more efficiently, every mouthful should be chewed thoroughly.
