WHAT TYPE OF INSULATION, IF ANY, SHOULD BE PLACED UNDER VINYL SIDING INSTALLATION?
CONTRACTOR “A” SAYS TYVEK THEN 1/2″ TUFF-R SHOULD BE PLACED ON HOUSE THEN VINYL SIDING OVER THAT.
CONTRACTOR “B” SAYS YOU ONLY NEED 3/8″ FAN FOLD INSULATING WRAP THEN APPLY SIDING OVER THAT.
WHICH IS CORRECT? AND DOES ONE METHOD PRESENT A PROBLEM NOT ANTICIPATED BY THE OTHER, SUCH AS MOISTURE RETENTION AND MOLD GROWTH?
I will assume you are having an existing house sided over your old siding.
The R- value will be greater the thicker the insulation. Most foam type of siding has the R- value listed on it.
The Tyvek is good but not necessary if the seams of the fan fold are sealed. the foam will act as a vapor barrier just as the tyvek does.
It is really a matter of cost. Both systems will work. I would expect the first contractor to be more expensive. Fan fold is usually only 1/4″ by the way and has negligible r-value. The reason you use it is if you are placing vinyl siding over older siding it helps to provide a smooth surface to lay the siding upon and give you a smoother look.
The disadvantage of using 1/2″ is that it may cause the siding to stick out around your doors and windows. The advantage is greater insulation value. But a layer of insulation does very little good if the seams are not sealed. A lot of contractors will skip on this step.
