Does leaving tools inside engine bay considered mechanic negligence? If so what steps do I take to fix?
I take my car for regular service to the dealer, because they should know how to work on my new car. But a few days ago I found a rusty screw driver sticking out of the front grill… I tried contacting the service dept. but no answer. Today the radiator’s fan started to squeal really loud and now the engine light is on. Its only a 9 month old car. Could this be related to the screw driver left on top of the radiator, for a couple of weeks?
For those of you wondering this is a brand new of the lot car (2007).
Well first off, the dealer is not the best possible place to take your car for general maintenance. In fact I know a mechanic who worked at the dealership, and became manager of the floor. He said something to me I will never forget.. (and he quoted what his boss told him)
“We need to hire less experienced younger kids, because they will work for minimum wage, as long as they can figure out how to do most things, they are good for the job”
and many other quotes from this guy we call the crapshop keeper.
My buddy ended up quitting because they would not pay him more than 12 bucks an hour for being a 10 year experienced mechanic/electrical engineer and manager.
So anyway, aside from that.. I partially agree with the first poster.. BUT not completely.
The best thing to do is take the car in to a mechanic other than the dealer. Explain the situation and ask if they can say for sure the screw driver was to blame. If not, you really have no case here.
Try to ask around for recommendations for mechanics. The dealer chargers the highest labor rates (generally) and will not necessarily be the best place for the job.
I seriously doubt the screw driver is to blame, and if it is, there would be some trouble proving such a thing to cover the cost of damage, which is somewhat minimal as it is only the radiator fan.
