The Mayo Clinic Weight Loss Diet
Beware of fad diets, warns the Mayo Clinic, a respected group of health care professionals with locations in Scottsdale, Arizona; Rochester, Minnesota; and Phoenix, Arizona. Over the past 30 years, rumors have been circulated that healthy weight loss can be achieved through a weight loss diet consisting of cabbage soup, grapefruit and bacon. These bogus fad diets have been touted as “The Mayo Clinic Diet” to gain added credibility, but in fact, the institution does not endorse any of this malarkey. To clear the air, the Mayo Clinic has published a book of their own to let Americans know that dieting is a thing of the past and lifestyle change is the way of the future for healthy living.
According to the official Mayo Clinic weight loss diet, weight management specialist Donald Hensrud says you can begin your healthy weight loss by adding five habits, breaking five habits and adding five bonus habits. First, they say, you must eat a healthy breakfast (but not too much). You must eat 3-4 servings of fruits and vegetables each day. You must eat whole grain pasta and bread. You must eat healthy fats like olive oil and nuts. And you must walk or exercise for at least 30 minutes a day. Then, you must break a few habits. Don’t watch TV while eating and spend no more time watching TV than you do exercising. Eat no sugar, except for what is found naturally in fruit. Eat no snacks, except fruits and veggies. Limit the amount of meat and low-fat dairy that you eat. Avoid restaurant food unless it fits into your diet program. Lastly, you can add 5 bonus habits, such as keeping records of what you eat, keeping records of your physical activity, walking or exercising at least 60 minutes a day, eating mostly fresh foods and healthy frozen/canned foods and writing down your daily goals.
The Mayo Clinic Diet will be challenging, like all other legitimate weight management initiatives, admits Donald Hensrud. However, the challenges vary from person to person. “For some, it might be eating in front of the TV. For other people, it might be physical activity. For other people, it might be eating breakfast,” he explains. “We have an action guide in the book, and it offers suggestions on how to deal with these barriers. If people approach this the right way, it doesn’t have to be drudgery. It can be enjoyable, healthy and sustainable.” With a healthy, balanced and nutrient-rich diet, losing weight naturally will occur until the body reaches its comfort level of maximum efficiency. For some, this may only take a few weeks to stabilize and for others, it could take up to a year. The important part is to stay motivated, no matter how long a duration your weight loss program is intended to run.
“When people want to lose weight, in many cases, they do have to eat less of certain foods,” explains Donald Hensrud. “But they apply this across the board. The more they can’t do something, then the more they want to do it, and it’s just not sustainable. If somebody is hungry, I tell them to eat.” He adds that the Mayo Clinic weight loss diet includes a unique food pyramid of foods that are satiating, nutrient-dense and relatively low in calories to keep the body feeling satisfied longer. He adds, “We do have to watch foods that are high in fat or high in sugar. But there’s always something to eat, and people can choose vegetables or fruits virtually anytime.
