Big Day Ruined By Flammable Wedding Dress
Julie Turnbuck, 34 from Tiverton in Devon, England had the shock of her life last Saturday after her wedding dress caught fire and had to be removed at the altar to avoid burning her skin.
Julie who had been arranging all the details of the big day for over a year had saved around £30,000 to make her wedding to Peter Huntington a day to remember for the rest of their lives. She definitely got her wish when shortly into the ceremony at St Paul’s Church, a misplaced candle caused the dress train to catch fire and the flames rapidly spread up towards the main garment. Some close by friends and family tried to rip the train from the dress to halt its progression but the fire was too hot and many burnt they fingers.Julie thankfully listened to Peter’s quick-thinking suggestion to remove the dress and managed to break free from it just before it was entirely engulfed. The flaming garment was put out using wedding guest’s hats to bail water from the bath usually used for during baptisms. At one point there was a risk of the church pews catching alight also but one quick thinker poured water over them also to prevent this happening.
The dress was last worn in 1931 when her late grandmother, Martha Wintbury wore it on her wedding day. The material was not safe at all as the dress has been designed and made before their were any fire-retardant standards in place for clothing.The material must have been made of very flammable material observed a fire officer who was one of the first on the scene. He suggested that when dresses are handed down by an older generation, precautions should be taken to check its fire-retardant qualities. Julie only received minor burns but the fire officer pointed out how lucky she was. “once you get stuck in a piece of clothing that is alight, it is very difficult to remove and deep burns usually occur”. fortunately Julie was wearing undergarments so was not too embarrassed and managed to make it to the after wedding reception venue
Peter who is a mechanic has bizarrely got experience in dealing with spontaneous combustion after he suffered a similar incident where his hair gel caught fire when he was working on a car. The flames went out reasonably quickly but still caused a certain about of scaring. The couple are planning to reschedule the wedding for this summer and are looking into castle weddings. Nothing flammable will be in a mile radius from the venue they have promised.
