Could Healthy Eating Damage Your Teeth?
You are surprised all of a sudden when you see cavities and don’t know the reason what is causing them. No matter you are eating to maintain your health intact, but it is a matter of grave concern.
One such victim was Suzanne Walters who luckily finds that her sparkling teeth have cavities in them. She was a regular visitor to her dentist Dr. Vincent Chiara and during her recent visit; she was informed about the reason as to why she has been developing cavities. Dr. Chiara was also examining other patients with the similar disorder and found that the formation of cavities was all due to the untimely eating without taking the proper care of teeth.
Dr. Chiara mentions that a lot of patients take sugar in one form or the other that ultimately helps the formation of cavities in the teeth. Sugar plays a vital role in the formation of cavities and other tooth diseases.
All kinds of antacids, cough and sore throat lozenges and mints have sugar in them but there is no clear information on the wrapper or the packet in which they are contained.
The name sugar is replaced by dextrose or sucrose, glycol or glycerol. In some cases, corn syrup was even used. But all these types of names ultimately lead to one and that is sugar.
It has been made clear by Doctor Gary Drahos at UIC’s College of Dentistry that the sugar present in the mouth takes the form of an acid and that destroys our tooth enamel. If we keep on sucking mint or lozenges for a long time until they vanish in our mouth, the quantum of damage done is more and it effects the most vulnerable part of the mouth, i.e, teeth.
Every candy or lozenge or mint toffee is kept at the most vulnerable and the weakest part of the cavity that acts as a shield for our tooth and avoids the formation of cavities.
Doctors say that the formation of the cavities could be ceased and there are a lot of ways for doing so. The very first thing that you need to do is to reduce the amount of lozenges or mint toffees per day. One can also use the sugar-free format of the same that are easily accessible in the market. It is advised by the dentists worldwide to brush the teeth twice a day. In addition, one can also rinse teeth after eating or drinking tea or coffee or any potable thing that tends to form stains on the enamel.
The other precautionary measure is to lessen the intake of soda or the sweetened carbonated water that damages fluorides and hence our tooth enamel. We must also try the intake of potable and fluorides rich water which comes through the taps only. Though we use more bottled water these days, it is not on par with the regular tap water.
