Water Softening
Softening water in freshwater aquarium?
I want to soften the water to about less than 25 ppm (general hardness) because I’m breading neon tetra. Is there any formula which can soften water. Also, can you throw in some tips to successfully breed neon tetra. Thanks!
Softening of water can be accomplished in more than one way, however I strongly recommend against pH reducers that add phosphate and often result in an unstable pH.
I will generally use a blend of RO and tap water for my clients that desire softer water for their Amazon River fish. Then I will add minerals back in INCLUDING calcium, my preferred method are balanced trace element blocks such as Wonder Shells (often added for a few days).
To maintain stability I use Peat OR better Almond leaves in the form of Bio Lif (by Nirox). Almond leaves have an advantage over peat in that they also control anaerobic and aeromonas bacteria.
Keep in mind you still need to maintain some calcium and other minerals as well as a KH of at least 30-50 ppm. Often forgotten is that the Amazon River comes out of the Andes Mountains loaded with minerals only to be softened by plant life and other organic processes, it is NOT mineral free.
